Choosing The Right Wine
Selecting the right wine with your meals can be confusing if you do not know much about wines. Here's a little guide to make the selection process a little easier:
Varieties of Wine: I know of over twenty varieties of wine but I'm sure there are more. Here are the most popular five vines. (I'll add more as time permits):
Zinfandel: Called the American grape wine because it's possibilities were first realized in Sonoma. Zinfandel ages into strong "big" wines.
Cabernet Sauvignon: The defining grape of Bordeaux, "Cab" has now been planted all over the globe and results in a medium-to-full-bodied wine with flavors of blackberry and green peppercorn.
Merlot: Less astringent than Cabernet, Merlot has a softer mouth-feel that makes it nearly universally popular.
Rose: Made from red grapes, Rose is best when made in the dry European style, when it retains the character of red wine.
Chardonnay: Still the most popular white grape, Chardonnay can taste like vanilla and butterscotch or green apples and tropical fruit, depending on where it's grown and how it's aged.
